Hello, I am seeking advise from anyone who has used Stith mounts to mount a scope on their 54. I have a couple of Stith mounts but I have not been able to fully seat a scope in the mount. I would appreciate and advice. thnaks, jandy28ford
Sorry, no information on Stith mounts. My rifle is drilled and tapped for Weaver mounts, and the bolt handle has been modified to use a standard scope. I'm guessing that Stith mounts will require a scout style scope.
hi, not sure if you still check or update this site, but i have a question, i just aquired a model 54 .270 and it is my first bolt action rifle and i cannot figure out how to remove the bolt, and don't want to break anything. I followed your instructions, i cocked the rifle, put the safety in the intermediate position, pulled the bolt back until it stopped, pulled the trigger, and it will not release. is there something i am missing, like a bolt release button? it is completely stock, no modifications have been made.
Sorry for the late reply. Try not putting the safety on, pulling the bolt back, then pulling the trigger. You put the safety on if you want to take the bolt apart, I believe, but it's been a while.
To remove the bolt step(1)bring the bolt all the way to the rear untill it stops. Step (2) push the trigger to the front and hold it there. Step (3) pull the bolt to the rear. Step (4) Smile.
Pushing the trigger to the front won't release the bolt on a M54. The trigger needs to be pulled to the back to drop the sear that doubles as a bolt stop.
That is how I removed the bolt from my M54. I will go and check my rifle. OK we are both right. On my M54 built in 1935 if I pull the bolt all the way back to the bolt stop pulling the trigger will not allow me to remove the bolt but if I push the trigger forward I can remove the bolt. If I pull the trigger in the normal manner before I reach the stop I can remove the bolt. I bought this rifle along with other guns from an estate and it has an aftermarket stock that I wouldn't use for firewood and the Lyman sight is missing the slide also the rear receiver bridge has two holes drilled and taped for an unknown scope mount base. Thanks for the quick reply WALT
